BSAC Blue Wave Swim Team Competes at AAU Jr. Olympics

Swimmers on the BSAC Blue Wave team recently traveled to Greensboro, NC to compete in the AAU Jr. Olympics. It is a multisport event with thousands of participants from across the United States. The Amateur Athletic Union was established in 1888 with the philosophy of “Sports for All, Forever”.

The AAU Jr. Olympics took place over five days at the end of July. Blue Wave Coach, Rich Rogers, especially likes this event because it helps swimmers get out of their comfort zone and come together as a team. At most meets, swimmers

Meet Mark Corley, the newest BSAC Blue Wave Swim Coach! Originally from the Midwest, he brings 30 years of prior coaching experience to our team. In 2008, he moved to Jacksonville and later learned about BSAC through his friendship with Coach Rich Rogers and through the many meets he attended here with other teams.

BSAC’s Mermaid Camp had a successful debut in December, offering an unforgettable experience for young swimmers between the ages of 5-12. For the very first time, pink and blue tails filled our heated, Ken Hagan Community Learn to Swim Pool. Lifeguard and resident mermaid, Mariah Diaz, led the 5 day course which covered everything from underwater flips to proper swimming technique.

Chris Colwill is a two time Olympian who began diving right here at BSAC when he was only five years old. After high school, he went on to become one of the most successful divers in NCAA history and will now return to his alma mater as Georgia University Diving Coach.

Out of the thirteen years Chris spent training at BSAC, his favorite memories growing up revolve around the friendships he formed along the way.

BSAC’s Senior Director of Sports Programming, Theresa Hickie, has been awarded Public Citizen of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers (NAHW). This award annually recognizes someone that is not a social worker but carries out the philosophy NAHW believes in.

Neely Heilman is a brown-eyed fourteen year old who loves pizza, family, and time with her friends. At just three years old, she started competitive training for soccer which quickly became the focus of her young life. But this past year, everything suddenly changed. Refilling the 50-meter pool and 16.5-foot diving well at BSAC is underway!! New paint, new pumps, new lines, and more! Soon two pools will be open at BSAC — the granddaddy 50-meter and the newly opened 25-yard community pool. It’s a great day at BSAC, with many more to come!
