Virtual Swim League and Junior Olympic Games Swim Event – Coming to High 5!

BSAC Director of Swimming, Rich Rogers, and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) have successfully secured the rights to host a global Virtual Swim League (VSL), this summer at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center. Swimmers can compete in this event by way of the “Virtual Swim League” (VSL); structured by Coach Rich and the AAU. BSAC will hold three (3) VSL events throughout June and early July.

The season will end with BSAC hosting a swim event for the Junior Olympic Games. This will be a “blended” event—held onsite and virtually.

BSAC Blue Wave Swim Team Competes at AAU Jr. Olympics

Swimmers on the BSAC Blue Wave team recently traveled to Greensboro, NC to compete in the AAU Jr. Olympics. It is a multisport event with thousands of participants from across the United States. The Amateur Athletic Union was established in 1888 with the philosophy of “Sports for All, Forever”.

The AAU Jr. Olympics took place over five days at the end of July. Blue Wave Coach, Rich Rogers, especially likes this event because it helps swimmers get out of their comfort zone and come together as a team. At most meets, swimmers

This fall, BSAC will debut a behind the scenes project that has been many years in the making. Children and families at our main campus will soon be able to enjoy a brand new playground, complete with a shade structure.

The playground will be located to the left of the basketball courts and will be visible from the parking lot. It will have two slides, monkey bars, ladders, and other fun climbing apparatuses. Soft green turf will cover the ground and make a pathway to the gated area entrance.

Meet Mark Corley, the newest BSAC Blue Wave Swim Coach! Originally from the Midwest, he brings 30 years of prior coaching experience to our team. In 2008, he moved to Jacksonville and later learned about BSAC through his friendship with Coach Rich Rogers and through the many meets he attended here with other teams.

After a successful winter training session, the BSAC Blue Wave Swim Team visited Savannah, Georgia for their annual travel meet in January. This is Blue Wave’s third year of participating in travel meets, having previously visited the Caribbean and New Orleans. Each year the trips grow in popularity among swimmers and parents alike.

BSAC’s Mermaid Camp had a successful debut in December, offering an unforgettable experience for young swimmers between the ages of 5-12. For the very first time, pink and blue tails filled our heated, Ken Hagan Community Learn to Swim Pool. Lifeguard and resident mermaid, Mariah Diaz, led the 5 day course which covered everything from underwater flips to proper swimming technique.

Members of the BSAC Blue Wave swim team had a special guest speaker on December 24th, 2018. Olympic gold medalist, Davis Tarwater, spoke about his lifelong journey to the London 2012 games, inspiring young swimmers to work hard and chase dreams.

His career started in high school when he set three state swimming records in his hometown, Knoxville Tennessee. Davis Tarwater went on to become a three time NCAA national champion and thirteen-time All-American during his time at the University of Michigan, where he won a Big Ten Medal of Honor in
