A lot has changed in the 51 years since the Autism Society held the first National Autism Awareness Month in April of 1970. Today, we know there isn’t just one form of the condition. Modern diagnosis techniques are now able to identify disorders in social skills, speech, movement, and more across a wide spectrum of behaviors. While the subtypes vary greatly, they all share the need for greater understanding in common.

And also, for ensuring that no one falls between the cracks.

Special needs adult members of Team T.R.I.D.E.N.T. lend helping hands in support of LEGO-building programs

 TAMPA, Fla., January 25, 2020 – High 5, a community-based, 501c3 non-profit organization, dedicated to providing regional leadership in after-school programs and sports recreation, proudly announces a new partnership between Team T.R.I.D.E.N.T. the High 5 program for special needs adults and the local chapter of Bricks 4 Kidz, part of a global LEGO® brick-based learning program.

BSAC and Livingstone Academy have long been leaders for special needs education in Hillsborough County. Now, they join forces in a new partnership, filling a gap in much-needed services for special needs students and adults.

Chuck Burgess (CEO of BSAC) and Chris Pello (CEO Livingstone Schools) met in Leadership Brandon through the Chamber of Commerce in 2014. They quickly built a professional relationship after discovering their common interest in serving the special needs community. BSAC’s 11th Annual Casino Night Raises Over $63,000 for Scholarships

Over 450 local business leaders and community members attended BSAC’s Annual Casino Night on Friday, March 29th, and boy, what a night it was! BSAC was able to raise over $63,000 in scholarship support for families in need of financial assistance. These children will now be able to participate in programs including swim lessons, summer camp, after-school, TRIDENT (special needs programming) and many of our other great programs.

Team TRIDENT put on a fantastic performance in our 7th Annual Talent Show, Broadway or Bust! Students practiced for months leading up to the show, which was held on December 14th, 2018 in the BSAC gymnasium.

Every year, students in TRIDENT have the opportunity to shine on stage, expressing their unique personalities and gifts. Parents especially love seeing the joy on their child’s face as they finish their talent and step off the stage. TRIDENT students were beyond excited to participate in the Hillsborough County Special Olympics Swim Meet held at BSAC on Saturday August 4th.  Swimming is an integral part of the curriculum for TRIDENT students, but specific training for the various stroke categories began eight weeks prior to the event.

“So many of my students did not know how to swim when they came to BSAC,” said Candi Corsi, Director of the TRIDENT program. “Now they are competing and winning blue ribbons, so I am very proud of them.”
