BSAC and Livingstone Academy have long been leaders for special needs education in Hillsborough County. Now, they join forces in a new partnership, filling a gap in much-needed services for special needs students and adults.

Chuck Burgess (CEO of BSAC) and Chris Pello (CEO Livingstone Schools) met in Leadership Brandon through the Chamber of Commerce in 2014. They quickly built a professional relationship after discovering their common interest in serving the special needs community. BSAC Impacts 21 Local Communities Through Mobile Swim 2019

In 2018, Hillsborough County saw a spike in drownings and had more than any other county with 11 deaths. According to the Department of Children and Families, there was a 7% increase in youth drownings across the state, for a total of 88 deaths.

In an effort to save lives and meet the need for water safety education, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County has increased funding for Mobile Swim initiatives. They have partnered with various organizations to expand outreach and provide free lessons in communities.

BSAC Blue Wave Swim Team Competes at AAU Jr. Olympics

Swimmers on the BSAC Blue Wave team recently traveled to Greensboro, NC to compete in the AAU Jr. Olympics. It is a multisport event with thousands of participants from across the United States. The Amateur Athletic Union was established in 1888 with the philosophy of “Sports for All, Forever”.

The AAU Jr. Olympics took place over five days at the end of July. Blue Wave Coach, Rich Rogers, especially likes this event because it helps swimmers get out of their comfort zone and come together as a team. At most meets, swimmers

This fall, BSAC will debut a behind the scenes project that has been many years in the making. Children and families at our main campus will soon be able to enjoy a brand new playground, complete with a shade structure.

The playground will be located to the left of the basketball courts and will be visible from the parking lot. It will have two slides, monkey bars, ladders, and other fun climbing apparatuses. Soft green turf will cover the ground and make a pathway to the gated area entrance.

The BSAC After-School Experience (BASE), is bringing back its most popular after-school clubs in addition to exciting new options! After a long day, students can look forward to spending time with their friends while developing personal interests and hobbies in Culinary, Arts & Crafts, Robotics, LEGO’S (intro to Robotics), Community Service, Gardening, Odyssey of the Mind, and Trade. Students have the opportunity to register for two clubs in the fall, and two clubs in spring.

Summer Mermaid Camp

Learn how to swim like a mermaid or merman at BSAC’s half day camp! Participants will learn how to swim with their feet together, practice underwater flips, swim through hoops, dive to pick up rings, and maneuver gracefully through the water with a fin and tail. This camp will also include fun games and arts & crafts.

The use of swim fins and tail are included in the cost of camp, however, participants are also welcome to bring their own.

Requirements:
Must be at least 6 and can swim proficiently

Meet Mark Corley, the newest BSAC Blue Wave Swim Coach! Originally from the Midwest, he brings 30 years of prior coaching experience to our team. In 2008, he moved to Jacksonville and later learned about BSAC through his friendship with Coach Rich Rogers and through the many meets he attended here with other teams.

Members of the BSAC Blue Wave swim team had a special guest speaker on December 24th, 2018. Olympic gold medalist, Davis Tarwater, spoke about his lifelong journey to the London 2012 games, inspiring young swimmers to work hard and chase dreams.

His career started in high school when he set three state swimming records in his hometown, Knoxville Tennessee. Davis Tarwater went on to become a three time NCAA national champion and thirteen-time All-American during his time at the University of Michigan, where he won a Big Ten Medal of Honor in
